Jorinda, his bride, is turned into a bird. She is quarantined in a room filled with 7,000 baskets of other birds -- alluring and otherwise. As he searches for her, he expects to find Jorinda radiating with the pulchritude of an enchanting, most exotic bird. Seeing as how she is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom -- or just to Joringel because he loves her -- that's okay.
He sifts through baskets of the finest exotic birds, but hears the song of a nightingale over the other cries. Her song is unlike any other, but she looks like a sparrow.
That is his bride.
